The last mile – definition
The last stage of the journey of public transport passengers – between a larger transfer hub and to the destination. This is, for example, the route from the bus stop to home or to work.
The problem of the so-called last mile connections, i.e. filling the transport gap at the last stage of the journey, is often a challenge for transport managers. In the case of public transport, this is important because the lack of an appropriate transport connection on the last mile discourages many people from using public transport in general and is the reason for covering the entire route, not only its last leg.
There are various ways to connect the last mile: creating local bus connections or shuttle connections, shared mobility, e.g. a network of city bikes or scooters, developing bicycle infrastructure or investing in Park and Ride car parks.
